Imperfections; An Analysis My first graduation project: about imperfections, I analyzed my own work and noticed that a lot of my work is not perfect. I like the little imperfections in things, so I wanted to analyze my own imperfections. I chose the unusual things: My heartburn, split ends and disliking tomatoes. I documented all kind of stuff I could do with my imperfections that distract from the fact that they are imperfect. As working method for the investigation I used a wall to put my finding on so I could look at it and think of new stuff. This method I used in the bookform, instead of making pages I made one continuous book.
Essay #01 In persuit of chance I wrote an visual essay about chance in graphic design. In the visual part of the essay I put chance to the test and let it help me form my essay. As example: I rolled the dice for the font I would use, I made a big plastic bag with colors on little notes whence I would draw a color, I went to different waste-paper bins to look for thrown away paper and for a few weeks I burried the essay in my garden.
Essay #02 In persuit of chance I wrote an visual essay about chance in graphic design. In the visual part of the essay I put chance to the test and let it help me form my essay. As example: I rolled the dice for the font I would use, I made a big plastic bag with colors on little notes whence I would draw a color, I went to different waste-paper bins to look for thrown away paper and for a few weeks I hanged the essay in a tree.
Catalog of Coincidence In persuit of chance I collected as many stories about coincidental meetings as possible. I collected these stories in a database so you can read them on a website and, if you'll like, add a story. On the website all the stories are connected trough the words that are in them. If you click on a word, all the stories with that word in it show up. The stories are also catagorized by subject, every subject got its own colour.
Annual report; Academie Minerva The Academie Minerva Annual Report designed by Gisanne Hendriks and Nynke van der Bij. The concept as a reaction on the Annual Report from last year made by other students. Photo's, teachers and students we thought where missing. We think they are the most important in a school. Because it is an art academy image is also pretty important, the school is al about visuals. We wanted to visualize what's happening in general and with some students and teachers more personal. As visual book we made 5 little general quires and 4 big personal student or teacher quires.
Thesis The thesis I made about my graduation project was made with chance. I made pages with all the info and when I was done I shuffled them around so the order was totaly random.
TEDxGroningen; Intro video I designed the intro video for TEDxGroningen. With the help of 'We love it when a plan comes together' on the editing and adjusting the video.
TEDxGroningen; Programme book The title/subject on this TEDx was: Connect the dots. My Idea was to involve the game: Connect the dots in the programme book. Every speaker had his/her own word that described what he/she does. This word was my inspiration on a illustration on connecting the dots. This way you could have a little extra fun, and remember afterwards what the talk was about without reading the text. Your book was also your nametag, you could hang it around your neck.
Making Paper I organized an event on paper making. Making paper is one of the things I love the most and why not share that with other people. Everybody could take his or her own extra ingedient to add to the paper to make it more of an experiment of what would happen.
Ashtanga yoga Groningen For my great yoga teacher Maxi I made some illustrations and flyers. I took an object related to the kinds of yoga Maxi teaches and made an illustration out of it.
Report; Internship Report on my time with We love it when a plan comes together as intern. In the report I hide the text parts from the bigger picture, this to show that behind every image I made was a story to tell.
C.O. Jellema C.O. Jellema is a dutch poet, who's poem 'op de kwelder' we had to typograph. We where with 10 persons working on this project, and all had to make one poster with a piece of the poem on it. My piece of the poem was: "Besturen goden ons? Denken wij soms. Overtroeft zichtbaarheid dat?" in english: Do gods control us? We sometimes think. does visability surpass that? My interpetation of that piece: what is the visability of eveything, is something you can't see something that does'nt exist. Do gods exist? Is air a god because you can't see it, or is it visable because you can hear or feel it?
Annual report; Mamamini Annual report for the second hand store: Mamamini. I got an old book from the Mamamini, I used its paper to make new paper for the annual report. The books are given to the Mamamini for free, the paper is free this way. To safe as much money as possible the report is printed in grayscale.
Book; 200 pages. 100 objects For a short assignment we had to make a book with 200 pages. My idea was to walk my route from school to my house, and to pick up 100 things. To make myself aware of the route I cycle every day.
Canal house I always love the canal houses in the netherlands, but unfortunatly nog every house is a canal house. As a reaction to the new build flatbuildings, were people live in a ugly square building on top of eachother, I wanted to make temporary crayon drawings of canal houses on these flatbuilings. I made some concept sketches on this idea. I took some canal houses from the centre of Groningen and drew them on a photograph of a flatbuilding from a suburb of Groningen.
Family agenda At first the parents can use it, and after the day the children can use it to cut things out of it.
New money; Noorderland For this project we had to make money for a new country, Noorderland. The idea became to make a card with a moving image on it to show if you have a lot or not a lot of money on your card. I made stop motions of some first needs in life getting more or less. Rice(for eating), fabric(for warmth/clothing), a sky(for air), milk(for drinking) and a out of pieces builded figure(for a house). Every time you take money from your card the image will change to less and if you receive money the image gets fuller.
Collection of Clouds A little book with my collection pictures of different clouds in the sky with no further purpose.
The Instagram cookbook Cookbook where every ingedient is cut out and replaced by every picture of that ingredient found on instagram. Most of the foodpictures on instagram are made of the full dish, but I tried to find the ingedients only. To show the craziness of pictures made and placed on instagram.
Itunes visualization; in flowers In this project I had to visualize my Itunes library. My idea was to plant a seed everytime I added a new artist to my Itunes. Every time I listen to music, the flower will grow. The fuller the pages are the fuller my Itunes. And the thicker the book, the more artist there are in my Itunes.
